Citadel of Cthulhu - Chapter 2

Chapter 1 can be found here.

Chapter 2 - Sigil in the Undergrowth

If Kaliaera was ‘the city of sunshine’, the arboreal jungles that made up the remaining southlands were a balancing, verdant twilight. I was warned repeatedly that venturing beyond the city walls was an almost certain death sentence, but I would not be deterred: I was too close to securing another piece of the puzzle.
In recent years a hidden pattern had started to reveal itself in the worldwide media of Providence. Rags, tabloids and broadsheets had become unusually filled with the recent exploits of famed (and infamous) explorers and archaeologists as they proudly declaimed their latest, ancient discoveries. Indeed, it was one of my more learned associates, Professor Humbolt Copernicus, whom had proposed to me of a linked history between the archaic edifices of this world and enlisted my aid to uncover further proof to his hypothesis. That was three years ago and so far it was appearing that his assertions were become more and more conclusive with every site I searched.
Kaliaera though was proving a much more formidable region to traverse, and despite the fact I considered myself something of an inveterate traveller of exotic lands, the dank humidity of the jungle southlands was a seriously punishing endeavour. Even my canine companion, a snowy-haired hound called Sleet, who had been ever at my side as I traversed windy mountains and frigid steppes, was suffering; lying exhausted upon a nearby rock, panting and whimpering.
My guide, a haggard and unwashed rogue, from the city’s paramilitary (and the only individual lunatic enough to venture out this far, I am assuredly told) who answered to the name of ‘General’ Alcazar had, so far, dutifully escorted me to the location of the ruins in recompense for a reasonable sum of money. He was now stood nearby, rifle in arms and gazing intently at the thick canopy above. I was not certain, but I swear I could hear him muttering something about eyes on us in the trees as he ruminated upon the stub of a thick cigar, sat firm between his unshaven lips.
I wiped away another trickle of sweat with a damp cuff as it rolled down the black Bakelite skin of my cam-visor before returning to the arduous task of ripping away entrenched vines from the surface of large carved stone, embossed with unfathomable runes. I was looking for one character in particular, one with seemed to bridge the gulf of time and distance, one which had so far appeared at all the sites I had visited.
There! Almost disguised in the large body of indecipherable text was a sigil that blurred when you looked at it directly and caused a sharp migraine pain to erupt behind the eyes. Even as the flash-image of tentacles which spurred from my imagination faded, I was jubilant that I had found further evidence for the Professor.
“So, it is here too then,” affirmed a cultured voice from behind me and one that I instantly recognised. I drew the Lockyer .32 handgun that I had borrowed from the General from under the flap of my rucksack lying next to me and stood slowly, prepared to meet my nemesis….

So, my first character for the 40Kthulhu project is Remi Étain, writer and investigative journalist extraordinaire with his faithful hound Sleet. Naturally my inspiration for Remi is Hergé's internationally renown character Tintin, and the rest of my planned warband will include members inspired by the supporting cast. It was actually a single panel from the graphic novel 'Tintin in Tibet' that prompted this whole decision.

Grime Lights - A Catch Up 2

Okay, so it has been a while since I caught up with my RYR entries (both on here and on Ammobunker). Indeed, I haven't even started August's and September's entry, although I have a firm idea about the former one. Anyway, I have July's entry under the theme of "Dog Days" and I have already written a background for the Watchdogs of the Ordo Nemuritorus here. The second is a remake of my Iron Maidens sister from March's entry as I really wasn't satisfied by here original and firmly believed that her concept could be better executed.

On a self-criticising note regarding Blan Tơjuh's head; what was meant to be a gritted-teeth snarl, ended up more like a sneer worthy of Bruce Payne.

Nu Metal - Possible New Project

Okay, so today, because the weather was rather nice, I visited my local zoo with the Runtherd and it got me all inspired because I saw lion tamarinds (that look just like Jokaero), licky skinks (which remind me so much like the old 40k slann models) and capybaras (because they're my favourite animals).

Now, the cause of this inspiration? Well, way back into my childhood, whilst my sister was into Sylvanian Families, I, being something of a tomboy, was more captivated by Battle Beasts (along with Monsters in my Pocket - the gothic 80's version of Pokémon). So, in the meanwhile before my super secret project starts, I'm really tempted to do some kind of space menagerie; with a slann, a Jokaero, and a whole host of other anthropomorphic races (I really want to make some kind of space capybara, maybe based on a Skaven model), because that's the kind of mad thing they used to do back in the Rogue Trader days.

Does anyone else have any other animal ideas to anthropomorphise into the gothic darkness of the 41st millennium?

Grime Lights - Inquisitrix Mejila Osu

A while ago I set out to convert Mistress Osu based upon a photo of Sigourney Weaver but wearing bespoke terminator armour similar to the old Rogue Trader inquisitors. Sadly the photos are terrible (and I'm not so happy with how her hair turned out), but I may revisit her before painting later.

I decided that she would be a minor psyker and a member of the Ordo Xenos (though in the Grime Lights narrative she won't be dealing with aliens) but aside from a propensity for appearing androgynous, I haven't really thought much about her background yet.

Oh, and apologies for the early post, but I am taking a day trip to the coast with the Runtherd to get out of the city for a while.

Rogue Trader - The Cabin Boy

This little guy was made as an afterthought really in 2013, something of a familiar for Shipmaster Everett made from spare parts I found in my box. He's a basic kitbash carrying the Shipmaster's sextant and hat.

Rogue Trader - Heavy Daddy

Barring the Cabin Boy (who was made as an afterthought really), this guy was the last of my Rogue Trader INQ28 crew made in 2013. With converting the Nurgle Lord being something of a right of passage for any modeller in INQ28, I felt it made sense to have a go myself. Obviously he is based upon a certain denizen from an underwater computer game setting with a little individual twist.

The Heavy Daddy is a biotechnological relic from a bygone era, found wandering the deep bowels of The Coelacanth, he was brought to the surface levels of the ship and is now deployed whenever some brutal muscle is needed on missions.

Rogue Trader - Magos Isambard Rho.

Magos Isambard Rho was one of the last miniatures I converted/sculpted in 2013 and at that time I considered him to be an incredibly ambitious endeavour. Looking back on him now though, I would have liked to have done some things differently (like the feet and left arm).

Magos Isambard Rho has served on board The Coelacanth for at least two centuries, longer than any other living member, so no one is sure of his exact age. Why he chose a relatively quiet and reclusive life on the heavy trading vessel is unknown, but rumours abound that he has a criminal past linked to forbidden xenos technology.

Rogue Trader - Ormond Sacker, Ship's Surgeon.

Ormond Sacker was actually created for a little bit of fun for a Sherlock Holmes themed warband back in 2013 (a project I never completed), but eventually Sacker was seconded to the Coelacanth crew as the ship's surgeon.

Ormond Sacker was one of the few surviving veterans from the ill-fated campaign on Malwand V, having served as an experienced field medic with the 415th Imperial Yeomanry until the regiment was entirely disbanded due to excessive casualties. Having been forcibly retired from service, Sacker took the first position he could find; as ship's surgeon on board The Coelacanth

Rogue Trader - Navigator Theophrastus Trepkos

Again, another member of the Coelacanth crew made back in 2013. I remember having a real hard time constructing the navigator because I couldn't find the right parts that meshed properly and it took me three or four attempts using different variations on parts before I was satisfied with the end result.

Navigator Theophrastus Trepkos has dutifully served aboard The Coelacanth for several decades now, surviving much longer than most serving navigators. Whilst he accounts his longevity to his iron will and sheer tenacity to resist the perils of the warp, he secretly fears that he has attracted the gaze of an unwanted patron dwelling in the sea of souls.

Rogue Trader - Pater Konstantin Zheleznaya

Pater Konstantin was my third INQ28 model for the Coelacanth crew in 2013 and very loosely based on another John Blanche piece of artwork that was very reminiscent of a Russian orthodox priest. Indeed he was built with a very 'Soviet' image in mind; I even scoured my bits box for an old plastic Amber Wizard from the third edition of Talisman for the arm with the sickle.

Pater Konstantin Zheleznaya, the Red Confessor of Raspadagrad, is a man of curious duality. When he's not actively persecuting the enemies of the Emperor with fiery rhetoric and frenzied abandon, he is a man of quiet serenity, offering calming wisdom to the faithful and spending much of his time in silent contemplation over theological matters. How he came to be aboard The Coelacanth, is something of an ecumenical matter known only between Pater Konstantin and the shipmaster Everett.

Rogue Trader - Lady Margarite de la Croix

I think Lady Margarite de la Croix was the second character I made back in 2013, but I think she was more kit-bashed than Earl Everett but I tried to work with more intricate detailing for the first time.

Lady Margarite de la Croix is a cold-hearted sociopath who is currently marriage-bonded to Earl Everett due to an ancient concordat between the de la Croix and Widdershins noble families. Lady Margarite despises being shackled to a man she loathes and is always finding ways to 'dispose' of him and secure command of The Coelacanth.

Rogue Trader - Earl Everett Widdershins-Barabbas

This was my first INQ28 miniature I built back in 2013 and was something of a test piece to get me back into the 28mm wargames groove. It is based on the picture in the Inquisitor Sketchbook by John Blanche.

This is Earl Everett Widdershins-Barabbas and he became the current shipmaster of The Coelacanth after the passing of his father Lord Bartholomew Barabbas and the suspicious death of his half-brother Marquis Jacques LeMarquand-Barabbas.
